Extraordinary 7-Day Rongai Route: A Northern Trek Approach

All-Inclusive 7-Day Rongai Route Trek Package

The Rongai Route is the only path that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It is drier, quieter, and substantially less traveled than the routes on the southern and western flanks.

For climbers who want genuine space on the mountain, fewer people on the trail, more wildlife in the lower sections, and a different perspective on the summit, Rongai offers something the popular southern routes cannot. It is also the strongest option during the long rainy season, when the northern side remains measurably drier than the south.

Experience the Extraordinary 7-Day Rongai Route, a scenic northern Kilimanjaro trek offering unique views, wildlife encounters, and a quieter summit approach.

Why Choose the Rongai Route

  • The lower sections pass through open savanna and forest with regular wildlife sightings, including elephant, buffalo, and various antelope species.
  • The northern face sits in a rain shadow, making Rongai route the most reliable route during the long rainy season.
  • The gradual northern approach delivers excellent acclimatization without sharp elevation gains.
  • The descent follows the Marangu Route, so climbers see two distinct sides of the mountain.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: 7-Day Rongai Route Package

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Distance: 7km  |  Elevation: 1,950m to 2,625m  |  Hiking Time: 4-5 hours  |  Terrain: Open forest and farmland, transitioning to moorland

The trek begins in a very different environment from the southern routes, open, quiet, and gradual. The trail passes through plantation forest and natural woodland where wildlife remains active. On a clear day, wide views extend back toward Kenya. Overnight: Simba Camp, 2,625m

Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Distance: 9km  |  Elevation: 2,625m to 3,630m  |  Hiking Time: 5-6 hours  |  Terrain: Moorland, open slopes, heather

A longer day crossing the moorland zone. The scenery opens considerably, and the summit cone becomes more prominent. Giant heathers and moorland grasses line the trail. Maintain a steady pace as this is one of the key elevation days for acclimatization. Overnight: Kikelewa Camp, 3,630m

Day 3: Kikelewa to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Distance: 5km  |  Elevation: 3,630m to 4,330m  |  Hiking Time: 3-4 hours  |  Terrain: Rocky moorland below Mawenzi peak

A shorter day brings you to one of the most dramatic camp locations on the mountain. The Mawenzi Tarn sits directly below the jagged volcanic spires of Mawenzi Peak. The short hiking distance is intentional; you are now at altitude, and the afternoon rest matters. Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp, 4,330m

Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Mawenzi Tarn

Distance: 4-6km optional  |  Elevation: Around 4,330m to 4,600m  |  Hiking Time: 2-3 hours  |  Terrain: Rocky slopes above the tarn

A rest and acclimatization day in one of Kilimanjaro’s most striking settings. Take a short walk higher on the slopes and return to camp, the classic climb-high, sleep-low approach. Rest, hydrate, and eat well in preparation for the days ahead. Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp, 4,330m (second night)

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Distance: 9km  |  Elevation: 4,330m to 4,720m  |  Hiking Time: 4-5 hours  |  Terrain: High saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo

You cross the saddle, that wide, open, near-lifeless plateau between the two volcanic peaks. The wind here can be strong and the landscape bare. Kibo Hut appears ahead at the base of the summit cone. Rest, prepare your gear, and eat before the early night ahead. Overnight: Kibo Hut, 4,720m

Day 6: Summit Night — Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, Descent to Horombo Hut

Distance: 6km ascent / 15km descent  |  Elevation: 4,720m to 5,895m, descend to 3,720m  |  Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up, 5-6 hours down  |  Terrain: Scree, rock, possible ice; moorland and forest descent

Midnight departure. The Rongai summit approach follows the same path as Marangu via Hans Meyer Cave, William’s Point, and up to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, then west along the rim to Uhuru Peak. Descent follows the Marangu route to Horombo Hut. Overnight: Horombo Hut, 3,720m

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Distance: 20km  |  Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m  |  Hiking Time: 6-7 hours  |  Terrain: Moorland and forest

The final descent via the Marangu Route through moorland and forest to the gate. Summit certificates are collected at Marangu Gate. Transfer to your hotel or onward destination. End of trek.
