Northern Circuit Route: A Complete 9-Day Kilimanjaro Trek.

All-Inclusive 9-Day Kilimanjaro Trek: Northern Circuit Route

The Northern Circuit Route is the longest route on Kilimanjaro and, by most measures, the one that gives climbers the best possible chance of reaching the summit. Nine days on the mountain is not excessive; it is a deliberate investment in acclimatization that shows clearly in summit success rates, which regularly exceed 90 percent for prepared climbers.

The Northern Circuit Route shares its opening days with Lemosho but branches north and completes a full circumnavigation of Kibo before approaching the summit from the south. The northern and eastern sections see almost no other climbers, making this the most remote and solitary experience available on the mountain. This is the right choice for those who want to do Kilimanjaro properly, without rush, and with access to parts of the mountain most people never see in Tanzania.

A complete 9-day Kilimanjaro trek via the Northern Circuit route offers scenic views, high summit success, expert guides, and an unforgettable adventure experience.

Why Choose the Northern Circuit Route

  • The Nine-Day Northern Circuit Route is the longest standard itinerary on the mountain. Acclimatization is thorough, and the body has real time to adapt before the summit push.
  • Summit success rates are the highest of any Kilimanjaro route, regularly above 90 percent for prepared climbers.
  • The only route that completes a full traverse of the mountain, giving views of every face of Kibo: north, east, south, and west.
  • The northern and eastern sections see almost no other climbers: no queues at camp, no crowded trails, genuine mountain solitude.
  • A longer expedition means more time with your mountain crew and a deeper experience of life on Kilimanjaro.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: 9-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via Northern Circuit Route

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Distance: 5km  |  Elevation: 2,100m to 2,750m  |  Hiking Time: 3-4 hours  |  Terrain: Dense montane forest

The same opening as Lemosho, through old-growth forest with excellent birdlife and the possibility of colobus monkeys overhead. A short, gentle introduction that gets you into the mountain rhythm without overextending on day one. Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp, 2,750m

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

Distance: 8km  |  Elevation: 2,750m to 3,500m  |  Hiking Time: 5-6 hours  |  Terrain: Forest edge into open moorland

The forest opens into the vast Shira Plateau, one of the most distinctive features of Kilimanjaro’s western approach and a clear sign of how different this climb is from the southeastern routes. Overnight: Shira 1 Camp, 3,500m

Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

Distance: 9km  |  Elevation: 3,500m to 3,840m  |  Hiking Time: 4-5 hours  |  Terrain: Open plateau with rocky outcrops

Crossing the full Shira Plateau toward the Cathedral rock formations and Shira 2. Views of the summit are clear on fine mornings. A moderate day with meaningful altitude gain that contributes directly to the acclimatization process. Overnight: Shira 2 Camp, 3,840m

Day 4: Shira 2 to Buffalo Camp via Lava Tower

Distance: 12km  |  Elevation: 3,840m to 4,630m (Lava Tower), descend to 4,020m  |  Hiking Time: 6-8 hours  |  Terrain: Alpine desert, lava formations, remote northern slopes

Here the Northern Circuit diverges from Lemosho. After Lava Tower, instead of descending south to Barranco, you head north onto the remote northern slopes. The terrain changes dramatically: more open, more exposed, and very quiet. Buffalo Camp feels like a true wilderness camp. Overnight: Buffalo Camp, 4,020m

Day 5: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp

Distance: 9km  |  Elevation: 4,020m to 3,870m  |  Hiking Time: 4-5 hours  |  Terrain: Northern moorland, open heathland with views into Kenya

A traverse across the northern flank with wide views extending into Kenya on clear days. The vegetation here differs from the southern side, lower, sparser, and more windswept. Third Cave is a significant historical camp on the mountain’s least-travelled northern trail. Overnight: Third Cave Camp, 3,870m

Day 6: Third Cave to School Hut

Distance: 9km  |  Elevation: 3,870m to 4,750m  |  Hiking Time: 5-6 hours  |  Terrain: High moorland transitioning to alpine desert

A significant elevation day as you climb to School Hut, one of the highest camps on the mountain. The eastern face of Kilimanjaro comes into full view, with Mawenzi prominent to the south. School Hut is high, exposed, and remarkable in its isolation. Overnight: School Hut, 4,750m

Day 7: School Hut to Barafu Camp

Distance: 13km  |  Elevation: 4,750m to 4,673m  |  Hiking Time: 5-6 hours  |  Terrain: Traverse around the eastern and southern face

The long traverse south and west to Barafu takes you across the southeastern flank, terrain very few Kilimanjaro climbers ever see. One of the most scenic days of the entire climb. You arrive at Barafu with a comprehensive acclimatization arc behind you, the best possible preparation for summit night. Overnight: Barafu Camp, 4,673m

Day 8: Summit Night — Barafu to Uhuru Peak, Descent to Mweka Camp

Distance: 5km ascent / 12km descent  |  Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m, descend to 3,100m  |  Hiking Time: 7-8 hours up, 4-5 hours down  |  Terrain: Scree and rock ascent, forest descent

Midnight departure, same as Lemosho and Machame, via Stella Point on the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. After nine days on the mountain, your body is as prepared as it will ever be. The descent to Mweka is long but manageable. Last night on the mountain. Overnight: Mweka Camp, 3,100m

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Distance: 10km  |  Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m  |  Hiking Time: 3-4 hours  |  Terrain: Forest trail

The final descent through the forest to Mweka Gate. Certificates are issued at the gate. Transfer to your accommodation for a well-earned post-climb celebration. End of the 9-day Northern Circuit Route trek.
