Incredible 6-Day Marangu Route Trek: The Classic Hut Route.

All-Inclusive 6-Day Marangu Route Package

Marangu is the oldest established route on Kilimanjaro and the only one that uses permanent hut accommodation instead of tents. It approaches the summit from the southeast via a more direct line, with a straightforward trail profile.

Sometimes called the easiest Kilimanjaro route, which is accurate in terms of terrain but can be misleading. Altitude is the same on every route. The 5-day Marangu route does not give the body enough acclimatization time, which is why the 6-day Marangu route itinerary, with a built-in rest day at Horombo, is meaningfully better and the version we recommend.

Incredible 6-Day Marangu Route Trek: The Classic Hut Route in Tanzania. Experience the Kilimanjaro adventure with hut stays, scenic trails, expert guides, and summit views.

Why Choose the Marangu Route

  • Hut accommodation means no tent setup or sleeping on the ground, a meaningful comfort advantage, particularly in cold or wet conditions.
  • The huts at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo include basic dining areas, reducing the personal equipment you need to carry.
  • The trail is one of the best-maintained on the mountain, wide, clearly graded, and consistently walkable.
  • The 6-day itinerary includes an acclimatization day at Horombo with an optional walk to Zebra Rocks at around 3,900m, meaningfully improving the climb-high, sleep-low effect.
  • The Marangu route uses the same trail for both the ascent and the descent, which some climbers find reassuring.
Marangu Route

Day-by-Day Itinerary: 6-Day Marangu Route Package

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Distance: 8km  |  Elevation: 1,860m to 2,720m  |  Hiking Time: 3-4 hours  |  Terrain: Montane forest, wide trail

A pleasant introduction through dense forest. The trail is broad and well-worn. Bushbuck may be spotted in the undergrowth, and birdsong accompanies you most of the way. Mandara Hut is a cluster of A-frame wooden cabins set in a forest clearing. Overnight: Mandara Hut, 2,720m

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Distance: 11km  |  Elevation: 2,720m to 3,720m  |  Hiking Time: 5-7 hours  |  Terrain: Forest transitioning to open moorland

The forest gives way to moorland as altitude increases, with giant heather bushes lining the trail and increasingly wide views. The saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks comes into view. Horombo is the largest hut complex on the mountain. Rest, drink plenty of water, and eat well. Overnight: Horombo Hut, 3,720m

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo

Distance: 6-8km optional  |  Elevation: Around 3,720m to 4,000m  |  Hiking Time: 3-4 hours optional  |  Terrain: Open moorland, rocky outcrops

The single most important structural advantage of the 6-day Marangu route over the 5-day one. You spend a second night at Horombo and take a shorter walk toward Zebra Rocks at around 3,900m. Your body makes genuine altitude adaptations overnight that carry forward through the rest of the climb. This day is not optional; it is where the 6-day itinerary earns its value. Overnight: Horombo Hut, 3,720m (second night)

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Distance: 9km  |  Elevation: 3,720m to 4,720m  |  Hiking Time: 5-6 hours  |  Terrain: Alpine desert, the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi

You cross the high saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi, a wide dusty landscape with minimal vegetation and strong winds. Kibo Hut sits directly below the summit cone. Eat dinner early, prepare everything for the midnight start, and aim to sleep by 7pm. Overnight: Kibo Hut, 4,720m

Day 5: Summit Night — Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, Descent to Horombo Hut

Distance: 6km ascent / 15km descent  |  Elevation: 4,720m to 5,895m, descend to 3,720m  |  Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up, 5-6 hours down  |  Terrain: Scree, volcanic rock, possible ice near summit

Midnight departure for the final push via Hans Meyer Cave and Gilman’s Point on the crater rim at 5,756m. From Gilman’s, the path continues around the rim to Uhuru Peak. After the summit, descent takes you all the way back to Horombo in a single long afternoon. Overnight: Horombo Hut, 3,720m

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Distance: 20km  |  Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m  |  Hiking Time: 6-7 hours  |  Terrain: Moorland and forest descent

The longest descent of the trek, retracing the route through moorland and back into forest. Summit certificates are issued at Marangu Gate. Transfer to your hotel or onward destination. End of trek.
