All-Inclusive 7-Day Machame Route: The Most Scenic Choice
Machame Route: 7 Days Overview
The Machame Route is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. It offers a genuine, physically demanding climb with excellent scenery, a well-structured acclimatization profile, and a strong track record for prepared climbers.
Informally known as the Whiskey Route, the Machame Route suits climbers who are physically active, comfortable with multi-day trekking, and want a route that feels like a real mountain challenge. The seven-day Machame Route is the recommended duration. Six-day Machame itineraries exist, but the reduced acclimatization time has a measurable effect on summit success rates.
Experience the all-inclusive 7-Day Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Enjoy scenic trek trails, expert guides, camping, and 100% summit success.

Why Choose the Machame Route
- Machame’s acclimatization profile, particularly the high-point day at Lava Tower, is one of its defining strengths.
- The route passes through every ecological zone on the mountain, delivering the full Kilimanjaro landscape experience.
- It is a non-repeating circuit route, with each night spent at a different camp, keeping the journey feeling consistently progressive.
- The Barranco Wall scramble on Day 4 is a highlight: challenging, engaging, and a clear measure of upward progress.
- Infrastructure is reliable without the trail feeling congested. The 7-day spacing keeps the experience from feeling rushed.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: 7-Day Machame Route Package
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Distance: 11km | Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m | Hiking Time: 5-7 hours | Terrain: Montane rainforest, root-covered trail
The Machame Route trail begins in lush rainforest, climbing steadily through cathedral-like trees. The path can be muddy after rain. This is a longer first day than Lemosho, so pace yourself from the start. Your guide sets the rhythm. By late afternoon, you emerge above the forest onto the moorland edge. Overnight: Machame Camp, 3,000m
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Distance: 5km | Elevation: 3,000m to 3,840m | Hiking Time: 4-6 hours | Terrain: Heathland and moorland, rocky sections
A shorter day crossing into the moorland zone. The vegetation here is extraordinary: giant heathers, lobelia, and groundsel that grow nowhere else on earth. Shira Camp sits at the edge of the Shira Plateau with open views back toward the plains below. Overnight: Shira Camp, 3,840m
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Distance: 10km | Elevation: 3,840m to 4,630m, descend to 3,976m | Hiking Time: 6-8 hours | Terrain: Rocky plateau, alpine desert, lava formations
The most physiologically important day on the route. You climb to Lava Tower at 4,630m for lunch, then descend to Barranco for the night at nearly 700 meters lower. Mild altitude symptoms around Lava Tower are common and normal. Your guide will monitor conditions and set a pace that gives your body proper time to adjust. Overnight: Barranco Camp, 3,976m
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Distance: 5km | Elevation: 3,976m to 4,035m | Hiking Time: 4-5 hours | Terrain: Barranco Wall scramble, valley crossings
The Barranco Wall is the first challenge of the morning, steep and requiring both hands in places, but not technical climbing. Most climbers find it exhilarating rather than frightening. The views from the top across the southern face are exceptional. After the wall, the trail winds through valleys before reaching Karanga. Overnight: Karanga Camp, 4,035m
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Distance: 4km | Elevation: 4,035m to 4,673m | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours | Terrain: Rocky, sparse alpine zone
A short day by design. Reaching Barafu early gives you the afternoon to rest before the midnight departure. Eat a full meal, hydrate well, and prepare your summit gear so nothing needs organizing in the dark. Your guide will walk you through the night ascent plan. Overnight: Barafu Camp, 4,673m
Day 6: Summit Night — Barafu to Uhuru Peak, Descent to Mweka Camp
Distance: 5km ascent / 12km descent | Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m, descend to 3,100m | Hiking Time: 7-8 hours up, 4-5 hours down | Terrain: Scree, possible snow, rocky descent through forest
Departure around midnight. The cold is sharp, and the pace is deliberately slow. Stella Point on the crater rim marks 5,756m. The crater rim trail leads southwest to Uhuru Peak. After the summit, the descent takes you all the way down to Mweka Camp at 3,100m. Overnight: Mweka Camp, 3,100m
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Distance: 10km | Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m | Hiking Time: 3-4 hours | Terrain: Forest trail
The final descent through the forest to Mweka Gate. Certificates are presented at the gate, a separate one for Uhuru Peak and one for Stella Point if those were your high points. Transfer to your accommodation for a well-earned rest. End of trek.
